The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple in Cody, Wyoming, is generating a lot of controversy. The construction has been on hold as there has been much divide in the city over the zoning laws.
On June 15, members of the Cody Planning and Zoning Board met to discuss the proposal for the building of the temple. With a majority vote, the zoning should have moved forward. However, Board Chairman Carson Rowley, determined that the motion failed.
Then in mid-August, Cody Mayor Matt Hall temporarily blocked the project’s building permit.
After church representatives threatened legal action in federal court, the City of Cody issued a building permit to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the temple.
Mayor Hall stated, “Cody has always been committed to fiscal responsibility and safeguarding the interests of our residents. Engaging in a protracted legal battle does not align with our values.”
Although there are still lawsuits and unsolved issues, as of Monday, September 18, the city of Cody has lifted the pass on the permit.
There is no construction on the site yet, but a church spokesperson said, “We are grateful to have a building permit.”
