Prior to his calling as a member of the quorum of the twelve on April 7, 1984, President Nelson was an internationally renowned surgeon and medical researcher. He received his BA and MD degrees from the University of Utah (1945, 1947).
His professional work included the positions of research professor of surgery and director of the thoracic surgery residency at the University of Utah, as well as chairman of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.

In the three-and-a-half years he has served as President of the Church, he has traveled 115,000 miles to 35 nations on six continents meeting with government and religious leaders and Latter-day Saints in large and small settings and led the Church through the pandemic. Asking Latter-day Saints to gather Israel on both sides of the veil, President Nelson has also announced 70 temples, including 20 at the April 2021 general conference.
