Government leaders and residents gathered on February 27 to mark the start of construction on a new Medical and Social Center in Gbenyedzi, a project aimed at expanding access to health care in the community and surrounding areas.
The project is supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, working in partnership with local authorities in the Golfe 1 municipality of Lomé, the capital of Togo.
The groundbreaking ceremony formally launched construction and included the symbolic laying of the first stone at the future building site. Once completed, the facility is expected to serve residents of Gbenyedzi and nearby communities who currently face limited access to adequate medical services.
Health care in the area is presently delivered from a rented facility that has deteriorated over time and no longer meets the standards required to provide reliable care. Local officials say the new center is intended to address these challenges and improve conditions for both patients and medical staff.
Plans for the project include construction on nearly 2,000 square meters of land and the development of two main buildings. One building will house consultation rooms, testing areas and a laboratory for basic medical services, while a second maternity block will include consultation offices and a delivery room designed to support maternal care.
Traditional and government leaders attending the ceremony emphasized the importance of the project for the community.
Togbui Mawuko Adela Aklassou IV, chief of the Gbenyedzi Canton, said the new center would help improve health services and potentially save lives in the area. He thanked the church and local partners for supporting the project and expressed hope that construction would proceed smoothly.
Koamy Gbloekpo Gomado, mayor of Golfe 1 municipality and minister delegate for local development, also praised the collaboration behind the initiative. He noted that many health workers in the area currently operate under difficult conditions and said the new center responds to an urgent need for improved facilities.
Representing the church, Emmanuel Komlan Amehouenou, president of the Lomé Togo Agoe Stake, described the project as both a humanitarian effort and an expression of faith.
“This first stone represents our faith, our hope and our confidence in the future,” he said during the ceremony.
Community leaders say that once completed, the Medical and Social Center will become an important resource for families in the area, offering improved health services and strengthening local efforts to promote well-being and dignity for residents.
