The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement today about the health of President Jeffrey R. Holland:
President Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is currently hospitalized for treatment related to ongoing health complications. He is receiving expert care and is with loved ones during this Christmas holiday. President Holland and his family express gratitude for the many prayers offered on his behalf and extend greetings of faith and peace during this season that commemorates the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Over the last couple of years, President Holland has faced a series of notable health challenges that have been observed publicly and marked by resilience and recovery. In early 2023, Church leaders announced that he would take a two-month leave from his apostolic duties to focus on treatments related to a kidney condition, including dialysis, and complications from COVID-19. During this period, he was excused from assignments and was absent from General Conference services as he worked on his health.
Later that year, in August 2023, President Holland was hospitalized again for ongoing health issues and spent several weeks under care; his recovery was described by fellow apostles as remarkable and, in some respects, miraculous.

In his General Conference talk, Motions of a Hidden Fire, President Holland spoke of his illnesses.
“Another experience began 48 hours after my wife’s burial. At that time, I was rushed to the hospital in an acute medical crisis. I then spent the first four weeks of a six-week stay in and out of intensive care and in and out of consciousness.”
“Virtually all my experience in the hospital during that first period is lost to my memory. What is not lost is my memory of a journey outside the hospital, out to what seemed the edge of eternity. I cannot speak fully of that experience here, but I can say that part of what I received was an admonition to return to my ministry with more urgency, more consecration, more focus on the Savior, more faith in His word.”
