The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed an incident at one of its chapels in Bajos de Haina on Sunday morning. The event occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. during a regular Sunday meeting at the Haina 1 Chapel of the Santo Domingo Stake.

According to the Church’s official statement, an individual entered the chapel attempting to intimidate and threaten attendees with a toy gun altered to appear real and a homemade caustic substance of low effect.

The Church said that due to the prompt action of leaders and members present, the situation was quickly brought under control. No serious injuries or fatalities occurred. Several people experienced minor effects from contact with the substance and were treated on-site. Only one person was transported to a medical center for evaluation due to an emotional reaction to the incident and is now reported to be stable and out of danger.

The Church expressed gratitude for the quick response of local authorities and the solidarity shown by the community, noting that this is the first incident of its kind in the history of the Church in the sector.

Church leaders said the individual’s weapon was a toy gun made to resemble a firearm, and the chemical substance posed only minor risk. Some attendees experienced mild effects from contact with the substance, and one person was transported to a medical facility for evaluation due to an emotional reaction. That individual is reported to be stable and out of danger.

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect, who was apprehended without injury. The church has emphasized that no one was seriously harmed and that normal activities at the chapel are expected to resume.

The incident highlights the growing concern over public safety in community spaces, even in locations typically considered low-risk. Local law enforcement has pledged continued vigilance and support for faith-based institutions in the region.

“All members, friends of the Church, and missionaries present are safe,” the Church said.
